The Collector's Guide to Variant Tags

A database to make sense of the existing tags – and all the missing ones!

Variant tags: 252 | Series tags: 90
Last Update: October 27th, 2026 (list of changes below)

Most of the time, a tag only states who the art is credited to. But roughly four out of 10 times, a Variant comes with original text. That short text is often cryptic to the average player – hence this database, where you will find all of them explained.

This index contains both individual Variant tags and series tags (defined as any tag shared among two or more Variants). Both types are from either of these types:
• Marvel Lore: The tag refers to a specific piece of Marvel lore.
• Marvel Comic/Storyline: The tag refers to a specific comic, series, or crossover storyline.
• Marvel Variant Cover Program: The tag refers to a specific series of alternate cover art commissioned by Marvel.
• Snap Variant Series: The game's native tag that links specific Marvel Snap Variants together.
• Obscure: The tag refers to a non-comics element.
• Dubious: The tag links artwork from unrelated sources, or should be swapped for better consistency.
• Useless/Redundant: The tag offers no added value or new information.

Missing Tags

As you can deduce, Snap's Variant tagging is quite inconsistent – so much so that a dedicated section for missing tags is warranted.
Located after the letter Z, this section consists mostly of Catalog Picks. Please note that this section does not aim to address every missing tag. Only about a third of the 1,000+ Catalog Picks currently carry a tag, and these are often uninteresting to the average player since they usually just reference a specific comic or cover program. Instead, this section focuses on three core objectives:

1. Suggesting consistency fixes for existing tags.
2. Revealing the lore behind visibly distinct, tagless Variants.
3. Identifying depictions born purely from an artist's imagination – a frequent occurrence with Variant Cover Artwork.

(Note: Variant series named after specific artists are excluded from this index. For instance, the "Envar Anime" tag is filed under "Anime," while an artist-specific tag like "Joverine Bastion" is omitted entirely.)

To search for a specific tag

On a computer: use the ctrl+f (PC) or command+f (Mac) function.
On a phone using Safari: click the address bar, type the tag and select the On this Page option.
On a phone using Chrome: tap the three-dot menu and select Find in page.

Types of variants featured in this database

  • Alternate Art: Catch-all category for Variants that don't belong in any other category;
  • Catalog Pick: Repurposed artwork, mostly from Marvel's catalog (includes retailers exclusive Variant Cover Art)
  • Casualization: Characters without their costume and powers;
  • Celebratory: Self-explanatory;
  • Homage: Mostly to comics lore, the MCU and the What If...? TV show…;
  • Humour: Self-explanatory;
  • Repurposed Asset: A visual from a third party converted in a Variant;
  • What If: Conceptual reinterpretations, excluding casualizations.

Dying from a terminal condition and desperate to leave the world a better place, Nate used a celestial Life Seed to brainwash a group of mutants into becoming a peace-enforcing strike force. Instead of Apocalypse's dark themes, Nate's brainwashed crew was inverted into "altruistic" concepts: Magneto became the Horseman of Peace, Angel became the Horseman of Life (later replaced by Storm), Omega Red became the Horseman of Wellness, The Blob became the Horseman of Bounty.

From the referenced series. Character is not Thor Odinson, but tech-genius tech-god Sigurd Stark, a literal fusion of Thor and Iron Man. This happened during the Infinity Wars, when Gamora used the Infinity Stones to fold the universe in half, fusing the souls of its heroes together. She folded the universe for a few reasons: 1) To fulfill her father's project to reduce the universe's population by half without killing anyone; 2) To distract – and potentially incapacitate – Earth's heroes from hunting her for the Infinity Stones; 3) To feed the starving cosmic entity trapped inside the Soul Stone in order to reverse the decaying of the Stone.

Limbo

Eric Guerrero's Rockslide

Tag Type: Marvel Lore
Variant Type: Homage to comics lore
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: New X-Men (Vol. 2), issues 39 and 40 (2007)

The character's transformation into a volcanic magma elemental. (To understand this Variant, it is necessary to note that Rockslide is an immaterial, geokinetic psionic entity whose consciousness exists as a psychic entity that projects a forcefield to manipulate a shell made of local earth or stone.) This happened when the character attempted to engage in physical combat within the demonic realm of Limbo. Due to the realm's volatile and distorted physics, the kinetic feedback caused his rock body to detonate. Because his non-physical consciousness remained anchored to the realm, he reconstructed his physical form using Limbo's volcanic terrain rather than standard Earth stone, reconstituting as a colossal, glowing magma entity.

Hope Summers: What If? AVX happens in an alternate timeline where the events of the Avengers vs. X-Men go completely differently. Among other things, the Phoenix Force chooses Hope Summers as its sole avatar immediately, bypassing the Phoenix Five (see below) completely.  Mister Sinister: the image is a metaphor that symbolizes his capture of the Phoenix Force, an object of scientific obsession for him. From the referenced series. Art shows the classic Yondu, one of the founding members of the original Guardians of the Galaxy team created in 1969, on the right, and the modern Yondu featured in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie on the left. Tag doesn't make much sense.

Throg

Olivier Coipel's Thor

Tag Type: ID
Variant Type: Cover Art Catalog Pick
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: Thor, (Vol. 6), issue 18 (2021)

From the referenced issue. Tag is somewhat problematic, Throg not being a Thor Variant but a distinct character. Simon Walterson was a football player cursed into a frog by a mystic, after what he renamed himself Puddlegulp. He eventually crossed paths with Thor Odinson when the latter was transformed into a frog by Loki. When Thor finally traveled back to Asgard, one of the goats from his chariot accidentally chipped a tiny sliver off of Mjolnir. Puddlegulp lifted it, was deemed worthy, and it transformed into a tiny hammer named Frogjolnir, imbuing him with Thor's lightning powers.

Time Displaced

Ryan Benjamin's Bishop

Tag Type: Useless/Redundant
Variant Type: Homage to comics lore
Linked to an alternate universe: No

Nod to the character's background: a mutant time-traveler displaced from a dystopian future. As such, every Bishop Variant is a Time Displaced Variant, so tag is redundant and, as such, useless.

Toon World

Wild Blue Studio's Annihilus and Baron Zemo

Tag Type: Obscure
Variant Type: Homage (Other)
Linked to an alternate universe: No

Homages to the 1930's animated comics aesthetics. Same as Toonpool and Toonforce tags. Toon World, Toonpool and Toonforce don't carry the same tag simply because they are from different studios. Toon would be a great unifying tag.

Tag Type: Marvel Lore
Variant Type: Homage to comics lore
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: Avengers, issue 394 (1995)

Character's look after her healing from life-threatening injuries in the referenced series. This happened after a mind-controlled Tony Stark turned against the Avengers and attacked Janet, leaving her on the brink of death. The team brought her to Hank Pym who proceeded to expose her to a massive dose of the same chemical and subatomic Pym Particle processes that gave her powers in the first place. Yet, instead of a standard cure, the treatment triggered a genetic reaction – Janet's body formed a healing cocoon. When it finally hatched, Janet was completely transformed into a barely human insectoid creature.

Tribute

Miguel Mercado's Darkhawk

Tag Type: Marvel Comic/Storyline
Variant Type: Homage to Marvel comics
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: Spider-Man, issue 1 Cover Art (1990) (original inspiration)

Mercado pays homage to Todd Mcfarlane's Cover Art (see Symbiote) – just like Miles Morales' Homage Variant. As such, the latter should definitely carry the Homage tag – the term is more appropriate in such a context – even though they don't come from the same initiative.

Gianluca Gugliotta's Electro

Tag Type: Marvel Lore
Variant Type: Homage to comics lore
Linked to an alternate universe: Earth-1610

Vector

Justin Currie's Nimrod Variant

Tag Type: useless/Redundant
Variant Type: Alternate Art
Linked to an alternate universe: No

Vector is simply the illustrator's alias, making the tag confusing and useless.

Venomized Rider

Lan Medina's Red Hulk

Tag Type: Marvel Comic/Storyline
Variant Type: Inside panel Catalog Pick
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: Venom (Vol. 2), issue 13.4 (2012), Circle of Four storyline

What the fusion of Red Hulk, Agent Venom, and the Ghost Rider looks like in a specific comic. This happened when Blackheart (Mephisto's son) attempts to bring Hell to Earth by opening a portal right in the middle of Las Vegas. Four characters happen to be in the city at that time: Red Hulk, Agent Venom, Ghost Rider, and X-23. They eventually team up to fight the demonic invasion, yet Blackheart proves too powerful, stripping Ghost Rider of the Spirit of Vengeance and trapping it in a mystic chamber. He then kills the entire team. After Mephisto grants the heroes a second chance at life to stop his son, Red Hulk and Agent Venom manage to free the Spirit. Realizing they need raw physical power amplified by supernatural forces to deal with Blackheart, Agent Venom temporarily passes his symbiote to Red Hulk, while the newly freed Spirit of Vengeance bonds with them simultaneously. This all-powerful entity crushes Blackheart and closes the portal.

Eduardo Mello's Iron Man

Tag Type: ID
Variant Type: What If
Linked to an alternate universe: No

Character if he had created an armor using vibranium. (He never did.)

Vision Returns

Brandon Peterson's Vision

Tag Type: What If
Variant Type: Cover Art Catalog Pick
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: Avengers (Vol. 4), issue 24.1 (2012)

Cover Art from the referenced series. Driven insane by the loss of her children, the Scarlet Witch used her magic to manipulate Vision's systems. She forced him to crash a Quinjet into the Avengers Mansion. As he stumbled out of the wreckage, his body began to malfunction and melt, vomiting up metal spheres that transformed into Ultron drones. Amid the chaos and panic, an enraged, corrupted She-Hulk ripped Vision to shreds. He is finally fully restored years later when Tony Stark uses backups of Vision's original engrams and programming to rebuild his body and download his consciousness back into it.

Void Merged

Kim Jacinto & Joshua Cassara's Sentry

Tag Type: What If
Variant Type: Inside panel Catalog Pick
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: Sentry (Vol. 3), issue 4 (2018)

Bob merged with the Void, uniting the hero and the monster into a singular, all-powerful entity. That was a deliberate act – Bob was completely broken by grief and exhausted from fighting his own mind. He eventually realized that total self-acceptance was his only path to peace.

Vote Loki

Tradd Moore's Loki

Tag Type: What If
Variant Type: Cover Art Catalog Pick
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: Vote Loki miniseries, issue #1 (2016)

From the referenced series. Moore designed the Cover Artwork for all 4 issues. The miniseries is about Loki’s controversial run for President of the United States during the 2016 election season. He launches his campaign after crashing a presidential debate to stop a HYDRA attack, where he publicly calls the official candidates spineless cowards.

W

Wakanda Forever

Jason Kang's Attuma and Namor

Tag Type: Dubious
Variant Type: Homages to the MCU
Linked to an alternate universe: No

Artwork inspired by the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever movie. Tag could be changed to MCU for consistency.

Wakanda Buster

Eric Guerrero's Hulk Buster

Tag Type: ID
Variant Type: Homage to comics lore
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: Totally Awesome Hulk, issue #9 (2016)

Black Panther pilots this armor in the referenced issue. T'Challa secretly engineered the mech suit as a contingency measure to neutralize the new Hulk, Amadeus Cho.

Wakandan Shield

Eduardo Mello's Captain America

Tag Type: ID
Variant Type: Homage to the MCU
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: Avengers: Infinity War movie (2018)

Character with the two shields given by T'Challa in the movie. Rogers was never given dual Wakandan shields in the comics. Because the image shows two shields, it should be tagged Wakandan Shields. That being said, MCU would still be a more appropriate tag.

Walk in the Park

Steve Kurth's Devil Dinosaur Variant

Tag Type: Useless/Redundant
Variant Type: Alternate Art
Linked to an alternate universe: No

Part of a diptych with Moon Girl's Picnic Variant.

Wall-Crawler

Tony S. Daniel's Nightcrawler

Tag Type: Marvel Comic/Storyline
Variant Type: Cover Art Catalog Pick
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: Uncanny Spider-Man miniseries, issue 1 (2023)

Nightcrawler adopts the actual job, mantle, and identity of Spider-Man on the streets of New York City in a specific miniseries. This happened after the catastrophic events of the Hellfire Gala where the anti-mutant organization Orchis successfully banished most mutants off Earth and began hunting down the few survivors. Escaping the purge, Kurt suffered massive survivor's guilt and existential dread, and taking up the Spider-Man mantle (with Parker's blessing) was Kurt's form of coping therapy. By stepping out of the high-stakes, gloomy survival war of the X-Men and putting on the mask of a friendly neighborhood wall-crawler, he could focus on joyful, street-level heroics. Kurt Wagner was a wall-crawler long before replacing Spider-Man, making the tag confusing and useless.

Tag Type: Marvel Lore
Variant Types: 1 Variant Cover Art Catalog Pick, 1 Homage to comics lore
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Wolverine reference: Return of Wolverine, issue 1 (2018)

Wolverine's look as Weapon X's guinea pig from the referenced series. Warpath probably carries the tag because he was also a target of the program before being a member of the Weapon X rescue team when Mutants took over the program. However, he is wearing his X-Force outfit on this Variant and, as such, should carry the existing X-Force tag instead.

Weapon X-Force

Ario Anindito's Lady Deathstrike

Tag Type: Marvel Lore
Variant Type: Homage to comics lore
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: Weapon X series, starting issue 22 (2017)

What If

20 (+?) Variants

Tag Type: Dubious
Variant Type: 5 Cover Art Catalog Picks, 13 Homage to the What If…? TV show (13)
Dedicated Album: No
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Contributors for the Catalog Picks: Carlo Pagulayan, Rich Buckler, Keith Pollard, John Romita Jr., Ron Wilson (1 Variant each) Contributors for the Homages: Brett Bean (1), Eduardo Mello (4), Envar Studio (9), Ludo Lullabi (1)

What If is another major tag that combines two very different kinds of Variants. The TV show also regularly takes liberties from the comics, which suggests that the two sources should be treated separately.

There are also Variants with the tag that shouldn't carry it because it makes no sense: Envar Studio's Strange Supreme: the character is exclusive to the show; Envar Studio's Uatu: the character is the episodes and comics narrator. Because he's never seen, tagging him as such is dubious; Every Hydra Stomper: same as Strange Supreme: the character has been created for the show; Rodgon and Envar Studio's Kahhori: Kahhori was invented for the show, but she's now a genuine comics character. However, there is absolutely no visual difference between the TV and paper version. Rodgon's Kahhori should carry the Chibi tag instead; Rodgon's Captain Carter could carry the Chibi tag instead. Captain Carter is a What If…? TV show character, yet only 2 out of her 9 Variants carry the tag… There's also a Variant inspired by the TV show that carries a different tag: Captain America's Rogers Hood Variant. Finally, Keith's Pollard Variant, which is erroneously tagged Bronze Age – even though Pollard is a famous artist from that period – is a What If comics Cover Art that doesn't carry the tag, but should.

Wild Pack

Joverine's Sandman

Tag Type: Marvel Lore
Tag Type: Homage to comics lore
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: Silver Sable and the Wild Pack series (1992-1995)

Character's look in the referenced series.

Winged

Tag Type: Marvel Lore
Variant Type: Variant Cover Art Catalog Pick
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: All-New Wolverine, issue 6 (2016), Marvel's Women of Power Variant cover program

From the referenced series. Character's look – with the yellow and blue outfit – when she officially took on the mantle and codename of Wolverine. The tag is confusing, because other Variants also show her as Wolverine without carrying the tag: Dan Hipp's, Wild Blue's Food Fight and Rian Gonzales'.

Wolvie

Eduardo Mello's Wolvie

Tag Type: Marvel Lore

Tag Type: Marvel Comic/Storyline
Variant Type: Homage to comics lore
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: X-Factor series (since 1986)

Character's look at the beginning of the referenced series – before the X-Factor team transitioned into blue-and-gold uniforms. Since he wore this exact green-and-yellow suit when he debuted in Giant-Size Fantastic Four, issue 4 (1975), this one should carry the Classic tag instead.

X-Force

Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: Cable (Vol. 4), issue 1 (2020) (Cable)*, The Amazing Spider-Man, issue 441 (Madame Web)

Madame Web's appearance in the referenced issue – where she is granted immortality and sees her body regressed to a youthful state. * First issue of Kid Cable. The total absence of connection between the two comics makes for a dubious tag.

Young Guns

Marco Checchetto's Magneto

Tag Type: Marvel Variant Cover Program
Variant Type: Catalog Pick
Linked to an alternate universe: No
Reference: X-Men (Vol. 5), issue 1 (2019), Young Guns talent showcase (2004-2019)

Variants that Should Carry a Tag

GOOD TO KNOW: As there's very little doubt about their missing tag, I made the decision to mention all tagless Chibi Variants right here, without pictures: Mooncolony's Goose, Hellcow, Hunger, Lockjaw and Redwing, plus Rodgon's series commissioned for Daredevil: Crimson Twilight: Karen Page, Lady Bullseye, Muse, Punisher War Machine and Shadowlands Daredevil.

This section is sorted alphabetically by character name.

A

Adam Warlock

Alex Horley (L; Alternate Art), Skan Srisuwan (M; Catalog Pick) and Jim Starlin (R; Catalog Pick)

Starlin's Variant should carry the Bronze Age tag.

Horley's and Srisuwan's Variants could be tagged with the existing Infinity Gauntlet, as the character did wear it for a few days. This happened after Thanos was defeated. Adam was quickly prosecuted by the Living Tribunal and forced to strip the gauntlet from his gems and split them. He distributed them to the members of the Infinity Watch that he himself created for the purpose of protecting the gems and kept the Soul Stone as a member of that Watch. The other members are Gamora, Drax, Moondragon and Pip the Troll. Its sixth member was kept secret for a while because… it was Thanos himself!

ADIA's Agamotto

Alternate Art. Should be tagged with the existing Nightforged.

Alex Ross' Agent 13

Catalog Pick
Could be tagged Iron Patriot, because that is the armor she wore in a specific storyline. Indeed, she borrowed the suit to level the playing field – she's only human – to fight with the Avengers to reclaim a piece of her soul Selene had stolen from her. ("Iron Patriot" is both the name of the armor and of the characters who wore it.)

The Ancient One

Winking Studios (L), James Ryman (C), Creative House Pocket (R), Zak Plucinski and Dardo Studios (all Homages to the MCU)
All those Variants should be tagged with the existing MCU, because the character is only a woman in the MCU.

ADIA's Annihilus

Homage (Other). Should carry the existing Pantheon tag. See Pantheon for more info.

Dell'Otto's Ant-Man

Catalog Pick
Could be tagged Original Sin, the comic series this Variant Cover Art is from. That being said, the look comes straight from the artist's imagination and has no link to comics lore.

Michael Del Mundo's Arana

Catalog Pick and Homage to comics lore
Could be tagged Spider-Girl, because the suit Anya's wearing is the one she wore when she temporarily took up the mantle of Spider-Girl. (That suit is inspired by Julia Carpenter's – the second Spider-Woman – outfit.

B

Skan Srisuwan's Black Bolt

What If Catalog Pick
Could be tagged Darkhold, this artwork being a Variant Cover Art from The Darkhold: Black Bolt, issue 1 (2021). That being said, the look comes straight from the artist's imagination and has no link to comics lore.

Black Cat

Ejikure's (L; What If Catalog Pick) and Derrick Chew (R; Catalog Pick)
Ejikure's – Black Cat wearing Ghost-Spider's Suit – could be tagged Gwen-Verse as the artwork is part of the "Gwen-Verse" themed Variant cover event (2022) promoting the release of the Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse mini-series. Chew's could be tagged with the existing Spidey Suit, because that's what she's wearing. (See tag for more information.)

Kael Ngu's Black Panther

What If Catalog Pick
Could be tagged Sabretooth, because the art features Black Panther fused with Sabretooth. This Variant Cover Art is part of the "Marvel Villains Reign" Variant cover program (2021) that reimagines heroes as if their worst enemies (or classic villains) had conquered them or taken over their mantles.

Black Widow

Miguel Mercado (L) and Pablo Villalobos (R) (Catalog Picks)
Marcado's should be tagged Sliver to avoid any confusion with existing Venomized Variants. "Sliver" is the name of the symbiote the character bonds with in Venom (Vol. 5), issue 27 (2023). This exclusive Variant cover was created as a "connecting" artwork; it's paired with another exclusive Variant Cover Art, this time for White Widow's first issue. You'll notice this one has also been converted as a Variant. (See White Widow below for more info.) Villalobos should be tagged with the existing Venomized. She's not bonded with Sliver. Both artworks were retailers-exclusive and not part of Marvel's Variant Cover Art program.

David Nakayama's Blink

Catalog Pick
Could be tagged with the existing Exiles because it shows Blink as she looks in Exiles, issue 9 (2018). In this specific storyline, the reality-hopping Exiles team gets scattered across an alternate timeline's ancient Arabian city. To escape a group of rogue Watchers, Blink and her teammate Iron Lad find and use a literal magical flying carpet to navigate the realm.

Iban Coello's Bucky Barnes

What If Variant. Should be tagged with the existing Venomized.

C

Derrick Chew's Captain Marvel

Catalog Pick
Could be tagged with the existing Ms. Marvel even if the artwork doesn't come from the same initiative. Nostalgic Variant cover for the launch of Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest #1 in July 2023.

Kendrick Lim's Carnage

What If Catalog Pick. Could be tagged Burning. What if because Symbiotes are very sensitive to fire.

Kael Ngu's Cassandra Nova

Catalog Pick
Could be tagged with the existing Marauders because it is the series this Cover Art is from. It could also be tagged Erik the Red, which is the second issue's antagonist, behind Nova.

He Tianyou's Cobra

Homage to comics lore
Could be tagged Modern, because it features the original Cobra's nephew Piet who took up the mantle during the Marvel 2099 futuristic timeline.

D

Dan Hipp's Daredevil

Homage to comics lore
Could be tagged with the existing Yellow Suit, because that's what he's wearing. Could also be tagged Classic because it is the suit he was wearing when first introduced in the comics.

Stephanie Hans' Destroyer

Catalog Pick
Could be tagged Kid Loki, because he's the one piloting the Destroyer. (Throg is also there!)
To stop Nebula from acquiring an artifact that would allow her to unleash an unstoppable armada of undead ships, adult Loki covertly formed the Asgardians of the Galaxy. To support them from the shadows, he manifested a fetch – a physical spiritual echo of his deceased younger self – to act as a pilot, using the magically enchanted Destroyer armor as a physical container to anchor the boy's ghost-like consciousness to reality. This provided the team with an incredibly powerful, untraceable heavy-hitter that allowed them to intercept Nebula and secure the dangerous artifact.

ADIA's Diamondback

What If Variant. Should be tagged with the existing Nightforged.

Alex Ross' Doctor Doom

Catalog Pick
Could be tagged God Emperor Doom, because that's Doctor Doom's look when he gave himself that title.
Doctor Doom took the divine title of God Emperor during the Secret Wars event after the Marvel multiverse was completely destroyed by cosmic collisions. By stealing the omnipotent power of the Beyonders, he physically fused the remaining fragments of shattered realities into a single patchwork planet called Battleworld. Because he was the sole creator sustaining this final bastion of existence, his massive ego led him to claim absolute, godlike dominion over it, rewriting the memories of its citizens to worship him as their eternal savior and creator.

E

Elektra

Marco Checchetto (top) and Tran Nguyen (bottom) (Catalog Picks)
Checchetto's first two Variants and Nguyen's Variant could be tagged Daredevil, because they show her as Daredevil, a mantle she assumed during Matt Murdock's incarceration. The artist's third Variant could be tagged Origin. While she doesn't look like that when first introduced in the comics (1981), it is the look she was given in the miniseries Daredevil: The Man Without Fear (1993), which serves as her origin story. Nguyen's Variant could be tagged Duality because it depicts the character's two identities: Elektra and Daredevil.

F

Eric Guerrero's Forge

Celebratory Variant
Could be tagged Native, as it was released for USA's National American Indian Heritage Month. (Forge is a member of the Cheyenne Nation.)

G

Björn Barends's Ghost Rider

Catalog Pick
Could be tagged Infernal Labs, because it is the name of the company that forces Danny Ketch, the second Ghost Rider, to wear a helmet similar to the Weapon X brainwashing helmet forced upon Wolverine (see Weapon X above). Their intention was to mind-control a Spirit of Vengeance into becoming a powerful, mindless soldier.

Daniel Acuña's and Gerald Parel' Gilgamesh

Catalog Picks
The character has had many different looks over the years. Both depictions are faithful to his look in different "eras": Acuña's: In the Eternals (Vol. 3) miniseries (2006), the Eternals had been mind-wiped and were living normal human lives. When they finally awoke, they didn't just get their memories back, they also updated their entire aesthetic for the 21st century. This is why Gilgamesh traded his ancient clothing for the high-tech, black-and-white suit featured on the artwork. And he is, indeed, stomping on his team-mate Makkari – see Makkari below. Parel's: in the Eternals (Vol. 5) comics from 2021-2022, Gilgamesh once again changed appearance, this time to align with the MCU movie's ancient Mesopotamian history – without duplicating the character's look in that movie. The high-tech armor was replaced by a gritty, heavy, battle-worn gladiator armor.

H

Heimdall Variants (as a Black man)

Homages to the MCU
Could be tagged with the existing MCU because the character was a white man before the first Thor movie.

Pandart Studio's Howard the Duck

Homage to comics lore. Could be tagged with the existing Noir.

Kaare Andrew's Hulk

Catalog Pick and Homage (Other). Could be tagged Wild Things as it is a direct homage to Where the Wild Things Are.

I

Iron Man

Iban Coello (L; What If Catalog Pick), Kael Ngu (R; Catalog Pick), Gary Choo (L; Catalog Pick, Homage to comics lore) and Creative House Pocket (R; Alternate Art)

Coello's artwork could be tagged Devil's Reign as it is taken from the Devil's Reign Villain Variant program in which iconic heroes are reimagined mashed up with the powers and traits of classic villains.

Ngu's could be tagged Mark Nil. In the Invincible Iron Man (Vol. 5), issue 16, Stark's company is stolen by the anti-mutant Orchis organization. Forced to go underground, he builds the Model Nilarmor (or Mark Nil), a clandestine, non-metallic stealth suit equipped with photon-bending technology. Such a suit was required for him to stop his replacement's – Feilong – production of Stark Sentinels (see Sentinel).

Choo's could be tagged either Gray or Model 1, as the artwork serves as an homage to Iron Man's 1963 debut by featuring the original Model 1 Gray Armor Stark built in a cave to escape captivity in Tales of Suspense, issue 39. (He has designed at least 72 other armors since!)

CHP's could be tagged Mark 85 (MCU), as it looks heavily influenced by that armor, which is specific to the MCU.

J

Artgerm's and Derrick Chew's Jean Grey

Catalog Picks. Could be tagged with the existing Classic, as it shows the character's look when first introduced in the comics.

Jean Grey (as the Dark Phoenix)

Philip Tan, Lucio Parrillo, David Nakayama and Peach Momoko
Catalog Picks
Could be tagged Dark Phoenix, as it is the form these Variants show (suit is red instead of green). When Grey is overwhelmed with uncontrolled negative emotions – like rage, fear, despair, or dark desires – she turns into her Dark Phoenix form.

Eduardo Mello's Jeff

Homage to comics lore
Could be tagged Gwenpool, because she's the one holding it. Jeff was originally created by MODOK, but he was quickly adopted by her. She is the one who named him Jeff and originally took care of him before eventually passing him along to Deadpool.

Nick Bradshaw's and Marco D'Alfonso's Juggernaut

Catalog Picks and Homages to comics lore
After losing his connection to Cyttorak – the mystical deity that gave him his original unstoppable powers – at the hands of Magik, Juggernaut refuses to crawl back to Cyttorak and be a slave to a demonic god of destruction again. He manages to compensate for his lost god-like strength by forging a techno-organic suit of armor forged from remnants of the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak – the raw material from which his original magical gem was forged. By doing so, he managed to keep his powers without depending on Cytorrak, effectively freeing himself. D'Alfonso's artwork pays homage to the Juggernaut of the nineties and early twenties. Back then, Cain Marko was dealing with fluctuating mystical powers, which inspired artists to occasionally draw him with industrial, heavy-metal armor plating that featured physical mesh, exposed bolts, and mechanical wiring running around his neck.

K

James Ryman's Jennifer Kale

Homage to the MCU. Should be tagged with the existing MCU as she is not a Black woman in the comics.

Jim Lee's Kitty Pryde

Repurposed Asset
Could be tagged Shadowcat, because she's shown wearing her Shadowcat (moniker) outfit.

L

ADIA's Leader

What If Variant. Should be tagged with the existing Nightforged.

Marco Failla's Leech

Alternate Art. Could be tagged with the existing Future Foundation, because he's wearing the company's outfit.

Loki

Mirka Andolfo (L; Catalog Pick) Megan Lara (M: Alternate Art)  and Artgerm (R; Catalog Pick)
Andolfo's Variant could be tagged Kid Loki (just like the above Destroyer Variant), as that is the character shown on the artwork. Lara's and Artgerm's Variants should be tagged Lady Loki, as that is the character shown on the artwork. Lara's could also be tagged with the existing Nouveau, even though it appears to be exclusive to Wild Blue.

M

Mateus Manhanini's M'Baku

Homage to comics lore
Could be tagged Intergalactic Empire, as the artwork shows the character's look in the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda storyline (2018–2021). In this storyline, an Alpha Flight exploration team is sent by King T'Challa to find the cosmic origin point of vibranium. After being accidentally sucked through a temporal anomaly and thrown 2,000 years into the past, the stranded explorers build a colony that slowly distorts Wakanda’s peaceful self-defence philosophy into ruthless galactic expansionism.

Kendrick Lim's and Jim Lee's Magik

Catalog Pick (L) and Repurposed Asset (R).
Lim's should be tagged with the existing Venomized. Lee's could be tagged New Mutants because she's wearing the outfit she had when part of that team.

Magik (in golden armor)

Catalog Picks
Could be tagged Golden Eldritch Armor because that's what she's wearing.
In The Labors of Magik storyline, Illyana decided she was finally ready to heal and move on from her dark past. She stepped down as the ruler of Limbo, handing the crown over to the Goblin Queen. During a climatic battle against the demon S'ym, her Soulsword was shattered. As she let go of her hold on Limbo and fully processed her emotional trauma, she manifested an entirely new, untainted golden armor and a new golden Soulsword. (Her Eldritch armor was silver before that.)

John Romita Jr.'s Makkari

Catalog Pick and Homage to comics lore
Should be tagged with the existing Homage, as it pays homage to the character's original look as designed by Jack Kirby – with slight alterations. (Makkari was a white man before being a woman in the Eternals movie.

Makkari as a Black woman (2 Variants shown here)

Creative House Pocket (L) and Eduardo Mello (R)
Could be tagged with the existing MCU because the character was a white man before the Eternals movie.

Mirage (as a Valkyrie)

Peach Momoko (L; Catalog Pick), Phil Noto (M; Catalog Pick), Peter Nguyen (R; Homage to comics lore)
While stranded in Valhalla, Dani stumbled upon a majestic, winged horse being hunted. Using her innate mutant ability to communicate telepathically with animals, she forms an instant empathic rapport with the creature, whom she names Brightwind. Little did Dani know that Brightwind was a sacred celestial mount belonging to Odin. By defending the horse and choosing to bond with it, Brightwind selects Dani back as his rider. In Asgardian tradition, this choice automatically bestows a portion of the Odin-force onto her, instantly inducting her into the ranks of the Valkyrior.

LEE Woo-chul's Moon Knight

Catalog Pick
Could be tagged Luna, as this is a What If mashup of Moon Knight and Luna Snow. It is part of the Luna Variant cover program (2024). To celebrate the popularity of Luna Snow (who originally debuted in Marvel Future Fight before crossing over into mainline comics), Marvel commissioned  special "Luna Variant" covers across various series.

Marcelo Vignali's Moonstone

Homage to comics lore. Should be tagged Meteorite because it is the moniker she used and the suit she wore briefly later in her criminal career.

Peach Momoko's Ms. Marvel

Catalog Pick
In the Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace miniseries (2024), Kamala Khan experiences a severe "hybrid sickness" and uncontrollable power glitches when her body becomes a biological battleground between her two genetic identities. After being resurrected on the mutant island of Krakoa, a genetic oversight causes her dormant mutant X-Gene to clash with her Inhuman DNA. This internal cellular war leaves Kamala physically weakened and causes her signature stretching abilities to dangerously malfunction, forcing her to find a way to harmonize her dual Inhuman and mutant heritage before her unstable biology tears her apart.

Sana Takeda's Mystique

Catalog Pick
Could be tagged with the existing Ms. Marvel even if the artwork doesn't come from the same initiative.
Mystique operated under the guise of Ms. Marvel in the Secret Invasion storyline, which is what this artwork depicts.

N

Kai Lun Qu's Namora

Homage to the MCU
Could be tagged with the existing Wakanda Forever, but MCU would be more consistent, as this depiction is a deliberate homage to the character as designed in the MCU.

Nick Fury Variants as a Black man (two shown here)

Eduardo Mello (L) and Giovanni Lorusso (R)
Could be tagged with the existing MCU because the character was a white man before the movies.

Nico Minoru

Peach Momoko (Catalog Pick) and Grafit Studio (Alternate Art)

Should be tagged with the existing MCU, as the floating eyeballs are an MCU creation. Those appear when she conjures the Dark Dimension, which is also a liberty taken by the MCU.

P

Alex Garner's Psylocke

Catalog Pick. Could be tagged New Exiles as it shows the character's appearance in that series.

R

Aruana Sick's Ravonna Renslayer

Homage to comics lore. Could be tagged with the existing Terminatrix, as it is the same character.

Creative House Pocket's Rockslide

Alternate Art. Could be tagged Red Suit. That being said, the look comes straight from the artist's imagination and has no link to comics lore.

Derrick Chew's Rogue

What If Catalog Pick and Homage to comics
Could be tagged Venomverse, as this cover is part of that Variant cover program that reimagines characters as bonding with Venom. It is also an homage to Jim Lee's Savage Land depiction of the character. (See Savage Land tag for more information.)

S

Alberto Dal Lago's and Sunghan Yune's Sasquatch

Homages to comics lore
Could be tagged with the existing Exiles, as it shows the character in that series, who is a different person and has white fur. (So the base card is also an homage.)

All Scorpion BND Variants (2 shown here)

ADIA (L), System Studios (M), Anand Ramcheron (R)
Homages to the MCU. Should be tagged MCU as all his Variants are deliberate homages to the character as designed for the MCU.

Kael Ngu's Sentinel

Catalog Pick
Could be tagged Stark Sentinel because that's what the image shows. In the Fall of X storyline, anti-mutant Feilong orchestrates a hostile takeover of Tony's company, Stark Unlimited, acquiring all of Stark's patents, prototypes, and resources in the process. Feilong then took Tony's Iron Man Armor schematics and combined them with the resources of the anti-mutant group Orchis to create Stark Sentinels – giant, heavily weaponized Iron Man suits optimized specifically to hunt and slaughter the X-Men.

Francesco Tomaselli's Sersi

Alternate Art. Could be tagged Discord, as the artwork is a play on the character's powers and the legendary apple of discord.

Nao Fuji's and Winking Studios' Shang-Chi

Catalog Pick (L) and Celebratory Variant (R)
Fuji's Could be tagged with the existing Hi Jeff! even if it distinguishes itself from the other Variants carrying the tag. It was part of the Jeff the Land Shark Variant cover program. Winking Studios' should carry the existing Lunar New Year as it was released to celebrate this event.

She-Hulk Pablo Villalobos

Variant Cover Art Catalog Pick. Should be tagged with the existing Venomized.

Justin Fields' Silver Samurai

What If Variant. Could be tagged Cyber-ninja, as this was the design's intention.

Alex Maleek's Silver Surfer

Homage to marvel comics
Could be tagged Moebius, as the original painting bears the inscription "After Moebius". The piece was entirely inspired by the ethereal, surreal sci-fi aesthetic of legendary French artist Jean Giraud (Moebius), who illustrated the 1988 Silver Surfer using soft, psychedelic hues rather than heavy metallic gloss.

Patrick Gleason's Spider-Man

Catalog Pick and Homage to comics lore
Could be tagged Oscorp Suit, as it is what the character is wearing. In the Vulture storyline, Peter Parker goes to work for a reformed Norman Osborn at Oscorp. Norman builds Peter a brand-new, high-tech suit. Because it is packed with Oscorp technology, the suit incorporates Norman's signature dark goblin-green accents. (The glowing golden traits shooting out from the spider emblem on his chest are actually digital diagnostic telemetry lines and hardlight projector nodes.)

Francesco Mattina's Spider-Man 2099

Catalog Pick
Could be tagged with the existing All-New, as it features the character suit from the All-New, All Different comics series.

Spider-Woman

Peach Momoko (L; Catalog Pick and Homage to comics lore), Rian Gonzales (M; Homage to comics lore) and Junggeun Yoon (R; Catalog Pick)
Momoko's Variant could be tagged Symbiote Suit because she's wearing Peter Parker's iconic symbiote suit – which was, in fact, Venom itself. It was part of Marvel's initiative celebrating 40 years of Spider-Man's iconic black symbiote costume. Multiple heroes had their normal gear swapped for the suit.
Gonzales' and Yoon's Variants could be tagged Modern, because they show the character with the suit that replaced the origins red and red one.

ADIA's Starbrand

What If Variant. Should be tagged with the existing Nightforged.

Envar Studio's Surtur

What If Variant. Should be tagged with the existing Mech.

V

Derrick Chew's Venom

Catalog Pick
Could be tagged Viking, as it shows the 9th-century Scandinavian viking Variant of Venom from alternate universe Earth-113, Anders Arnvidrson. Featured in Venomverse Reborn, issue 2 (2024).

Dale Keown's Vision

Catalog Pick
Could be tagged White as it depicts Vision in his white, gem-less form. In the Vision Quest storyline, Vision is abducted and taken apart by an international ring of government spies called Vigilance who fear his immense hacking capabilities. Hank Pym manages to physically put him back together piece by piece, but his artificial skin loses its red and green synthetic pigment, turning him chalk-white.

Anand Ramcheron's Vulture

Homage to the MCU. Should be tagged MCU as this depiction is a deliberate homage to the character as designed in the MCU.

W

Tyler Kirkham's and Jim Lee's Warpath

Catalog Pick and Homage to comics lore (L), Repurposed Asset (R)
Both should be tagged Thunderbird, because it shows James Proudstar assuming his dead brother's Thunderbird mantle before assuming his own identity as Warpath.

IMAGICA GEEQ's Wasp

Alternate Art. Should be tagged with the existing Anime.

Miguel Mercado's White Widow

Catalog Pick. Could be tagged with the existing Venomized. (See Black Widow for more info.)

Tyler Kirkham's Wolverine

Catalog Pick
Should be tagged Hellverine, as it is the character shown. In the Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance storyline, a government branch of Weapon Plus uses dark magic to graft a demon named Bagra-ghul onto Wolverine. Driven by a mind-control helmet, Logan briefly becomes a terrifying, flaming killing machine.

X

X-23

Derrick Chew (first; Catalog Pick), Stephen Segovia (second; Catalog Pick), Anand Ramcheron (third; Alternate Art), Grafit Studio (fourth; Alternate Art, Envar Studio (fifth; Alternate Art), Peach Momoko (sixth; Catalog Pick)

Chew: Could be tagged NYX as it features the character's look in this series – with streetwear.

Segovia: Could be tagged with the existing X-Force, as it is the suit she wears as a member of the team.

Despite what you can read online, Ramcheron's, Grafit Studio's and Envar Studio's Variants don't show her as Wolverine (no yellow and blue suit, no helmet). All three could be tagged Snap, as they show the character wearing slight variations of the suit created by Eduardo Mello for the base art.

Momoko's Variant could be tagged Wolves. (Her outfit is different and has no base in comics lore.)
